Early Life

Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822 in Pleasant Ohio. Ulysses's real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. Later he moved to Georgetown and went to school there until 14 years old. Grant worked on the farm. He disliked tannery but was a good horse man.Ulysses attended school in Georgetown until he was 14. Then he went to an academy in Marysville, Kentucky for one year. Ulysses joined the Military Academy at West point. He graduated in 1843.

Ulysses was commission l lieutenant. During this time he was stationed in St.Louis where he met his future wife, Julia Dent Grant (She was born on January 26 1826). He reached First Lieutenant. Ulysses had 4 kids, Frederick Dent ,Ulysses S. Grant Jr., Elen Wrenshall, and Jesse Root Jr. Then he was promoted to captain. On July 31, 1854, he resigned from the army due to drinking and disciplinary actions. That same year he decided to move his family to Missouri. Since he had quit the army he had to sell firewood in the streets of Missouri. He later humbled himself to work at his fathers tannery business, supervised by his two younger brothers. On April 12th, 1861 the American Civil War started .Ulysses decided to volunteer to help the Civil war. Ulysses got rejected but with the help of an Illinois congressman he got in. He was appointed to command an army 21st Illinois volunteer regional to command them. On April 9, 1865, the American Civil War ended.

Grant was our 18th president of the United States. He served 2 terms as president. From 1869-1877. After he won his first term his popularity spread far and wide, so it was not hard to win his second term when he ran for president again. His first inaugural address was on March 4 1869. His Democratic opponent was Horatio Seymour. He tried to bring the north and south closer. Most for other government offices Ulysses chose close friends and army officer. His electoral vote was 214 and his popular vote was 3,013,650. His opponent, Horatio Seymour's electoral vote was 80, and his popular vote was 2,708,744. After he was elected president, in September 1873, several important eastern banks failed. He also fought for the rights of Native Americans and Blacks. He used federal troops to protect them from the KKK and other white groups.

After Presidency
Ulysses tried to run for a third term but did not win. After he had finished serving his 2 terms, he retired to a private life with about 100,000 savings. He decided that he would go on a tour of the world. After returning from his trip he moved to New york, and he decided to run for president again in 1880, but did not win. He spent the rest of his life writing an autobiography about the war and earned 500,000. He also invested in a bank firm called Grant and Ward. His son was his partner. The company failed in 1884. Grant died on July 23, 1885, at the age of 63. He probably died of throat cancer, the result of his smoking. Later on his wife, Julia Dent Grant, died on December 14, 1902.
